How to Stay Safe at the Gym

By August 10, 2022 Blog, Exercise

Your workout routine is an important component of what makes you uniquely you, but sometimes, doing the same training routine can feel boring. This boredom can cause a false sense of security, and you can neglect proper form and other important steps to performing a safe workout. Muscle strain, tendonitis, and shin splints, along with joint, bone, and head injuries can result if you start getting sloppy at the gym. This goes for cardio, circuit training and traditional weightlifting. Here are some suggestions for helping you have a safe time when you hit the gym.

Start Preparing at Home

Gym safety starts at home. Eating a balanced diet and staying hydrated will help keep you alert and fueled for your workout. When you eat right and drink water, you’re setting your body up for success. Continue hydration throughout the workout. Be sure to dress appropriately for your workout, right down to your footwear.

Warm Up

Before beginning any exercise, take the time to warm up. Static stretching and dynamic stretching are crucial to helping the body enter into exercise mode and will reduce the possibility of injury further into the regimen. This part of the workout is the most important part when it comes to enjoying a safe exercise routine.

Use Good Hygiene

COVID-19 and its variants, the common cold, flu, and other infectious diseases are part of our world. The precaution taken to avoid contracting any of them is well worth the time expended. Wipe down all exercise equipment with sanitizer prior to each use. Also, be a nice gym-goer and wipe down your equipment when you’re done. Practice good hygiene in the locker room and on the floor, and, of course, wash your hands frequently.

Learn and Use Proper Form

Take the time to learn correct technique for each exercise before adding any weight to your program. Form matters, as it can be the difference between a safe workout and one that leaves you injured. Be okay with starting slow and learning the basics. A solid foundation can prevent injury down the road.

Cross Train

Cross-training is important to keeping your body healthy and safe while working out. Diversifying the types of exercise you do helps strengthen muscles that would otherwise be neglected. Cross training is especially important for strengthening tendons and ligaments that might wear down and cause injury.

Go At Your Own Pace

Despite how well you think you are doing, overconfidence is dangerous. Use a spotter or the safety stops when lifting to avoid injury. If you’re new to an exercise, don’t be afraid to ask for guidance from gym staff or the gym trainer. Always listen to your body, and if you’re experiencing pain, stop and take a breather. Overexertion can result in more harm being done.
